Rio Grande Food Project

Rio Grande Food Project

Did you know that 40,000 people in New Mexico — equal to the population of Farmington — seek food assistance every week? The Rio Grande Food Project (RGFP) is working hard to help. As the second largest food pantry in Albuquerque, we have been filling empty bellies for 24 years.

THEN AND NOW
In 1989, the Rio Grande Food Project distributed its first food boxes, a total of 1,667 meals. The number of people we serve and the amount of food we distribute has continued to grow over the years, to roughly 650,000 meals in 2013 that will fill 32,000 empty bellies. As the need for food assistance increases, and government commodity foods decline, we are tasked to do much more with much less. Demand for RGFP’s services — while always high — increases during the last two weeks of each month, as people’s support checks run out.

WHO WE SERVE
Our clients are the working poor and unemployed who have to make tough decisions every month with their limited funds. “Do I buy food or pay the utilities?” “Do I buy food or put gas in the car?” “Do I buy food or get that medication?” Your donation makes those decisions easier for our clients.

HOW WE WORK
We distribute food every Monday, Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. Currently, people can pick up food once a month… But it takes a community to fill all these empty bellies, and we are going to need your help to make that happen.

WHAT YOU CAN DO
• Hold a food drive or fundraiser at your office. It feels good to fill empty bellies.
• Make us part of your “Make a Difference Day”. Bring your employees to RGFP, to pack and distribute food. It will change the way you view your life and the lives of others…and your employees will love you for it.
• Designate RGFP as a recipient for your United Way donations.
